Eating at KFC here in Copenhagen is like night and day. One visit will have you leave regretting the decision to go there almost instantly and one visit will have you begging to the poultry gods and/or Colonel Sanders that the bucket you are devouring never runs out of delicious juicy fried chicken. My last visit luckily resembles the latter experience. But the visit before that was highly forgettable. So where does that leave KFC in the pantheon of american chains?
Fried Chicken is better than a cheeseburger?
I can’t stop thinking about what made that last take away meal I had from KFC so satisfying. The spice, the juiciness, the fact that the chicken was still hot and tasted like proper fried chicken should. I remember thinking, that this is better than a great burger. Was that a spontaneous thourght that entered my head in that exact moment of bliss, or was there more to it? Is really good fried chicken better than a really good cheeseburger? Probably not. Not in the long run at least. But I would say it’s a close call and even closer that I would have liked to imagine.
I had a bucket of mixed goodies. Thighs, drumsticks, chicken breasts and wings. A side of excellent coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy. The fries came as part of the combo. They were just ok. In Denmark we don’t have mac and cheese as a side option, something I would really like. But hey – let’s not kid ourselves, it’s all about the fried chicken and KFC fried chicken is just fucking good (when it’s good). I enjoyed every morsel. Picking the tender chicken meat clean of the bones and overeating of course, as one should when eating american junk food.
Verdict
I’m sorry to say it McD and BK – move over! The Colonel is coming in fast and he’s heading for the top spot. That last visit to KFC was just a really great experience and far more memorable than my last visits to McD and BK. And from experience I know that KFC is much better in the States. Or at least the KFC’s I’ve been to. It deserves it’s place on top of the list – for now.
